Looks like the choice is between AutoCAD (Full version, not LT, which
only does 2D), Chief Architect, and Archicad for full 3D rendering -
so pretty inaccessible to the non-commercial user (given the price of
the software) regrettably.  I suppose I'll have to draft out some
floor plans in 2D and then maybe take those to an architectural
practise to be meshed into a true model, or more likely, completely
redone!
