I just boolean, but Max's booleans are a little weird, so you have to learn
how to use them. Best way I can think of is to make all your primitives to
use for booleans, place them where you want them, then select all of them
and collapse to a single mesh, then booleans. Other people dislike
booleans
and won't use them, but I like them. Just make sure your wall objects have
enough segments to make clean booleans, then in the modifiers panel go to
radiosity subdivide to even the ploys out.
