If you're using Max, get a free plugin called Tex****ter, to start with.
Once you put it in your plugin files it will show up in the tools section
when you click on more. Now, Is your model 1 piece or several. If several
you'll need to make a texture map for each piece. Anyway, whatever the
case, go to the modifiers, uv map, unwrap uv. On the tool panel, click on
edit. In your mapping manu select normal mapping, in the options for that
select box map. Or whatever mapping method seems best to you. I just
prefer box. Then go to tex****ter, set the size of the map template you
want, I suggest large, at least 1000 x 1000, click on select object and
select the object you're mapping. This will create a mapping template
identical to the one that was created in the Unwrap UV. Save the map
template as, I suggest, a Tiff file. Save your object without modifying
it. This saves the unwrao UV coordinates you've created. Paint your
texture maps and create bump maps. then just im****t the maps into the
materials editor and apply them to the object. All things being equaly,
it should apply quite well. It's not as easy as that, though. You have to
learn the coordinates of the UV unwrap, which usually unwraps things
upside down, and you have to learn to paint the textures so they match
when they're applied. Not as hard as it seems, but it does take some
effort.
