John,
There are 2 camps with regard to architecturals. One camp believes
that everything should be done with primitives, and the other believes
that AECs are just too good not to use (me). Both approaches are
right, and each works. Luckily, in 3ds there is always more than one
way to do something.
To describe how to use AECs in 3ds Max, and in response to your post,
I put up a short tutorial at: http://blog.atcp.us/2007/06/11/dont-boolean/
describing how.
AECs aren't always appropriate, but they can be extremely useful in
lots of situations in non-standard ways to help with building rapidly.
In cases where the windows, doors, stairs, etc. are obscure and
organic, they would naturally have to be drawn with booleans and
primitives. If you need standard objects, then the tutorial will help.
I know you've moved on, but I've been on the road (in a hotel right
now), so it took me a while to write it. Just consider AECs another
tool in your box. Good luck!
