John,

My suggestion is to always render an animation to stills, then stitch
them together later. I would not suggest rendering directly to AVI or
any other movie format. I use Bink & Smack from Rad Gametools (http://
www.radgametools.com/) to piece together individual pics into movies.

To render to single files, just select F10 -> Common Parameters ->
Render Output -> Save File (Files...) and choose your output format
and file prefix. If you have the room, choose a non-lossy format.
